What is Stellar?

Stellar (XLM) is a blockchain-based distributed ledger network with a goal to create a platform that connects banks, payments systems, and individuals. XLM is the protocol token of the Stellar network. The Stellar platform is an open network that allows money to be moved and stored while XLM serves as a bridge that makes it less expensive to trade assets internationally.

  • A main goal of Stellar is to make cross border transactions cheap and easy. Cross border transactions normally require extra fees for international trading. Be this cryptocurrency or FIAT. Stellar however charges 0.00001 XLM for every transaction.
  • Unlike other tokens, lumens cannot be mined or awarded over time by the protocol. 100 billion XLM were created when the network went live, later reduced to 50 billion. The amount in circulation was increased by 1% annually ensuring tight control over XLM’s inflation rate.
  • When Stellar was created in 2014 one of its original aims was to put emphasis on the worlds ‘unbanked’ population. Using the Stellar network, individuals can build mobile wallets and banking tools without relying on traditional avenues.
