What is Chia?

Chia (XCH) is a layer 1 blockchain that uses a unique consensus mechanism known as Proof-of-Space-and-Time (PoST). This mechanism, combined with Chia's custom-designed programming language, Chialisp, is designed to be more energy-efficient than the traditional Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS) algorithms.

  • Rather than relying on centralised computational power, Chia uses a process known as “farming”. Where users allocate unused hard drive space to the Chia Network, reward scales depending on the amount of space shared.
  • Chia Network has its own programming language called Chialisp. An on-chain programming language that is smart contract-compatible and takes the key components of ETH, Solidity and Bitcoin to allow for simultaneous transactions instead of sequential.
  • XCH is the native token of the Chia network, it is used for transaction settlement, platform governance and staking to secure the network.

With an aim to offer a more energy efficient and sustainable consensus model, Chia’s novel PoST looks to improve upon the widely used PoW and PoS mechanisms. While Chialisp allows developers to seamlessly deploy dApps with familiar fundamentals.
