What is Optimism?

Optimism (OP) is a layer 2 scaling solution built on the Ethereum blockchain allowing developers to build DApps securely on top of its own ecosystem.

  • The project aims to lower gas fees executed on the Ethereum blockchain via the Optimism network. This is achieved through “Rollup technology” by batching transactions onto the blockchain.
  • The design of Optimism enables users to send arbitrary messages between smart contracts on both Optimism and Ethereum, making it possible to transfer assets such as ERC20 tokens between the two networks.
  • OP token holders can participate in Governance voting and also receive additional token rewards for supporting the Optimism ecosystem.

Although Optimism may seem like a standalone protocol, it is intentionally designed to be an extension for its parent chain Ethereum. The purpose is for both protocols to work hand in hand with each other, implementing real world applications and solutions in a simplified and secure manner.
