What is Starknet?

Starknet (STRK) is a validity rollup, commonly known as a zero knowledge rollup (ZK-rollup), for Ethereum. Functioning as a Layer 2 (L2) blockchain, Starknet allows dApps and transactions to scale substantially for computation while maintaining Ethereum's interoperability and security.

  • Starknet’s validity rollup increases the scalability of Ethereum by processing transactions off-chain and then providing proof of those transactions back to Ethereum, reducing the Layer 1 (L1) blockchain's load.
  • As transactions occur off-chain, it's crucial to ensure their integrity without needing to re-execute them. To address this, the team developed STARK (Scalable, Transparent ARgument of Knowledge) proofs of verifiable computation.
  • STRK is the native utility token of the Starknet platform, it is used to pay transaction fees, protocol governance and users can stake to help secure the network.

While the Ethereum network has been able to create an ecosystem that is secure and decentralised, network congestion can lead to increased transaction costs. Starknet’s L2 scaling solution aims to reduce computational load with its unique validity rollup and STARK cryptographic proofs, to offer a faster and cheaper way of processing large batches of transactions.
